Building Resolution Expertise to Protect Canadian Policyholders

As Canadians, we rely on life and health insurance to protect what matters most, our families, our health, and our financial security. Assuris exists to ensure that protection remains in place, even if an insurer experiences serious financial difficulty.

Assuris’ mandate is to be prepared for the resolution of any life and health insurer in Canada. Resolution is the structured process by which a financial institution that is failing, or likely to fail, is restructured or wound down in an orderly way. It ensures that policyholders continue to receive the protection they depend on, while maintaining confidence and stability across the industry. You can think of resolution as a safeguard for the future: a proactive framework designed to protect millions of Canadian policyholders and preserve trust in the life and health insurance system, even in times of financial stress. (For more background, see Resolution for insurers: Assuris’ commitment to stability and protection beyond financial viability.)

A Growing and Specialized Field

Resolution expertise is a relatively new, and rapidly evolving, discipline within Assuris and across the insurance industry. As Assuris plays a leading role in resolution planning and, when necessary, the resolution of a life and health insurer, the work involves close coordination with regulators, member companies, international bodies, and other stakeholders. (This collaborative approach is further explored in Cooperation and Coordination at the Heart of Insurance Resolution.)

In this environment, effective resolution work requires deep and diverse expertise across the life and health insurance industry, regulatory oversight, resolution planning, mergers and acquisitions, financial and operational risk management, and stakeholder engagement, as illustrated below.

At Assuris, we are proud to have a dynamic and highly experienced team dedicated to this mission. Together, they work collaboratively with stakeholders across the industry to strengthen preparedness, enhance stability, and ultimately better protect Canadian policyholders.
